The last decade saw a huge rise in teenage drama from the hugely acclaimed Skins, to the side-splitting hilarious Inbetweeners and then of course the not-so acclaimed and not-so hilarious Glee. In all three of these very different shows there is very different take on the teenager. Skins presents a grittier self-destructive side to teenage life while the Inbetweeners exploits the comedic stupidity of teenage behaviour. some of which is mistaken stereotype but more often than not is spot on. While Glee takes an unrealistic look at nerd stereotypes with a can-do-anything attitude which many found enduring but i just found exasperating.
sometimes though these three very different elements can combine in a T.V Drama. These are often soap operas of which the best example is probably Eastenders. Occasionly in the show they depict teenagers in what i think is a pretty real tone i.e Lucy Beale. There are always elements of comedy in every teenage storyline which i do find funny more often than not. However there are sometimes some very "Glee" characters such as Darrens really bizzare girlfriend Jodie who sets a new record for soap stupidity.
So are Teenagers faithfully represented in T.V Drama? well sadly there are too many Glee-like shows which outweigh the quality of shows like "Skins" and "The Inbetweeners" and even in those shows there are many WTH? moments which leave us unsatisfied in our presentation on the small-screen. but truthfully i don't think we really mind how we are represented on T.V. As long as there's sex, drugs and rock'n'roll we're all game to watch.
You do need to be a little more rigorous about following instructions Laurie. If you check again you will see that whereas the last blog post was supposed to be an analytical overview/survey, the instruction for this blog post asked you to choose a single episode and analyse it in more detail.
ReplyDeleteAs it is, you make a number of interesting and pertinent comments but the level of analysis remains a bit superficial. It would be helpful to edit this entry and dig a bit deeper. Increasingly you should try to use the toolkit to consider how technical codes and conventions construct specific representations. Don't be too quick to rush to judgement - you aren't a reviewer!
And try to use a variety of ways to present your responses on the blog so it's not always so much like an essay .. slideshow, podcast, webcam video etc
I'm not assessing this and in the end you will need to write a timed essay to get marks for my module - but this is a chance to be creative and have fun with the form (which will help you maximise your marks in your coursework blog!)
